Isolation is frequently involuntary (Covid, prison); solitude is often a chosen spiritual discipline; loneliness is inevitable. Not only that - loneliness can be a portal to compassion, community, and creativity. Loneliness, in part, is what made me a writer, artist, and student of transcendence. Thanks for this piece. My own journey has led me from a child of violent and addicted parents, to addict myself whose violence was inflicted on himself, to long term sobriety, to affiliation with a church while still in therapy and 12 step meetings. Thanks for your fine writing, keen insights, and willingness to share. I am a pastor whose ministries are greatly influenced by recovery. I am also the author of ten books, the latest being, “The Gospel of Loneliness” (Pilgrim Press, United Church of Christ). Peace, Dwight Lee Wolter.

Isolation for me was on a beautiful day all shades drawn, TV volume very low so that anyone at my door heard nothing but silence. Loneliness merely taking up all the space in my head and not living life. Solitude is sun, stars and time in nature listening
